Challenge and Choice~ A new day

Christmas Day 2018

Peace is theirs

who teach others

how to give.

May we all find the courage and faith to accept challenges and make compassionate, intelligent choices ~ as we are again given A New Day, A New Year.

From a New Year’s 2019 letter I wrote to the White House:

“He has the right to criticize who has the heart to help.”

-Abraham Lincoln-

May the New Year bring a lasting peace throughout the world and to your family.

May you find the peace found in teaching others how to give with a generous, kind heart.

May you lead ALL the people with integrity and compassion.

May you accept the mutual responsibility found in our large, supportive community of world citizens.

These thoughts are shared with each of you as my constant wishes for us all. ~For world leaders, for community volunteers, for homeless, for laborers, for philanthropists, for every single soul who shares this vibrant, fragile gift of our earth.

May this new year be one of positive optimism supported by integrity, courage and compassionate choices. Be well, all!

The Real Work of Christmas

“Let the real work of Christmas begin:

To find the lost

To heal the broken-hearted

To feed the hungry

To bring peace among enemies

To rebuild what has been torn down

To see the beauty all around…” ~anon.~

“It is Christmas everytime you let God love others through you….everytime you smile at your brother (sister, neighbor),

and offer him (her, them) your hand.”

~Mother Teresa~

In the spirit of hope, let us counteract the anger, danger, fear, hurt and injustice so commonly enacted in the world ~ with our own kindness, compassion, reverence and joyous infinite gratitude…..which is perhaps our best self, our true power and our greatest gift.

The Gift of Responsibility: Vote!

Be a lamp

or a lifeboat

or a ladder~

help someones soul heal.

Perhaps our greatest gift is the freedom to accept our individual responsibility to make choices which affect others, as well as ourselves, ~on personal, local, community, state, national and global levels.

See the big picture ~ as well as the close-up ~

See the world ~ as well as the intimate ~

~and help others get to the polls, mail in their ballots, exercise their greatest freedom and responsibility. Thank you for being a lamp, a lifeboat, a ladder.

Leadership ~ Compassion

Defenseless under the night

Our world in stupor lies;

Yet,dotted everywhere,

Ironic points of light

Flash out wherever the Just

Exchange their messages:

May I, composed like them

Of Eros and of dust,

Beleaguered by the same

Negation and despair,

Show an affirming flame.

– W.H. AUDEN, 20th c. poet

Compassion is the wish for another being to be free from suffering….The goal is to develop genuine compassion, this genuine wish for the well-being of another, in fact for every living being throughout the universe…..Compassion, loving-kindness, altruism, are the keys not only to human development, but to planetary survival.

-The Dalai Lama

Therefore, the WISE take care of everyone

And abandon no one.

They take care of all things

And abandon nothing.

This is called “following the light.”

-The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tsu

~ May we see beyond the drama, the fear, the vulgar and the hurtful, the anger and vengeance, the hopelessness….May we envision and work toward the world of peace and compassion we long for and know is possible. May we be united in this journey, -a life of integrity, courage, inspiration ~ as we continue to search for true leadership in the world. And be filled with unending gratitude for all who relentlessly pursue the path of truth, generosity, compassion and understanding.

Coming Home ~ Embracing Resilience

“Go back and take care of yourself.

Go home, and be there for all things.”

Thich Nhat Hahn

It’s May again!! I LOVE May! In all its glorious, fragile, green and blooming  life, here are the essential signs of resiliency in nature.

Everywhere, in this small coastal community, the warm glad expression “welcome home!” envelopes my newest chapter in this ongoing journey. After a “sabbatical” year away, exploring, teaching, sharing life with family & friends in a new city & state, ~ I again have chosen, with further conviction and commitment, my home place ~ and returned.

This Coming Home, this Embracing of Resilience, is a confirmation of the truth that sometimes our (my) traveling toward a new place, time , life – results in traversing the path of a circle. Sometimes we must leave in order to choose to return and to stay. Sometimes we must leave in order to heal, to learn, to find renewed resilience and strength. This year away has taught me that “home” is a certain quality of light, a purity of air and wind, the texture of the soft earth I walk on each morning, an awareness of immensity and infinity, a sense of place and purpose, a rare balance of solitude and community. Each of us must choose for ourselves- and hope to find that place which sustains our best self.

Coming home, in my life, is finally a complete embracing of resilience. This long, complex, challenging, ever-changing Journey of Reslience is perpetual; however, I’m discovering some shimmering power can transform the journey when the resilience itself is embraced and trusted. No longer just a hope, or a goal, or a title of the path I try to walk ~ but a reality, a solid forever part of who I am.

So, this past year has been an adventure, an exploration, something gained and something given, ~but I have come home now, to settle into a truth – into the powerful nature of consciously deciding:

I trust that I will be given what I need, and placed where I am needed.

For now, gratefully, here I am.

Still teaching children to read, still singing with the sea, still glad it is May again!

Miracles ~ This is our life: amazed, confused, unknowing, inspired. Unable to re-create the dawn or sunset, the ocean depths or infinite sky~ miracles are confirmed for us every moment of our lives.

Beyond and surrounding our small existence is the infinite, the invincible power we are sheltered by, yet never can claim. Faith is the nature of living beings, a gift nurtured by evidence of the mysterious universe just beyond our understanding.

This Fragile Life….

When we bring our energies together, they are increased a thousandfold. Systematic change cannot be achieved without the energy of community. If you want to transform society, you need a strong community. Without that, we can’t do anything at all.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh (The Art of Communicating)

(this post is created in honor of the expectant, intelligent, demanding voices & integrity of youth in a world of loss & inaction, after the tragedy at a U.S. high school.)

This forever fragile life ~ yet fierce and brave and so insistent. These past hours & days brought grief, horror, loss ,and pure clear insistence by the integrity of youth: Life is fragile, is miraculous, is to be honored and saved and loved.

Life – death. Light – darkness. Cold – warmth. Hate – love. Confusion – compassion. Fear – hope.  Anger – commitment. Intention – action.

These contrasting words of this past week, in a country full of chaotic change, lacking leadership and inspiration ~ led by the voices of children. How are we all so continually fortunate? Yes, fortunate, given another chance and another sunrise over & over,…to find a new morning full of youthful, intelligent expectations & demands – reminding the elders of their responsibility to preserve life, to stand for what they KNOW is right & just. To ACT on their useless words. TO HELP.

This fragility upholds a constant strength. In every snowstorm, there lies the promise of spring. Out of the senseless loss from angry gunfire and irresponsible politicians, rises the power of transparent truth. We WILL choose a different path. The day cannot come soon enough.
